Going Organic // Makeup

Today I thought I would share with you a bit about the makeup I wear.  Let me tell you, my concern over the amount of chemicals in the makeup I wear has grown significantly over the past few months.  A long while ago, I read a blog post written by a lovely lady named Katie Kukulka (who unfortunately no longer blogs), in which she discussed her switch to organic (or as close to organic as she could find) makeup.  Her post definitely grabbed my attention, and I began to ponder over the ingredients in the makeup I wore.  I did a little research on this website, picked ingredient lists apart, and googled ingredient terms that I didn't understand.  My goodness, I had no idea what was lurking in my makeup.  It's appalling.  Chemicals, parabens, aluminum - all found in cosmetics. I was quite dismayed to find out that I had literally rubbing all kinds of nonsense into my face.  For me, switching to makeup that was as organic as I could possibly find seemed like a necessary decision.

Through my searching, I found a wonderful brand called Everyday Minerals.  I started off with a couple of their eyeshadows in wonderful neutral shades, and loved them!  Over the past few months, I've been switching all of my daily makeup products to EM, with the exception of mascara, which they do not currently make.

My most recent switch was my foundation.  I had been wearing Bare Minerals for a couple of years.  I loved the look of BM...it smoothed out my complexion without making me look like I had caked my makeup on.  I researched it on EWG, and it scored well enough, so I wasn't too overly concerned with its ingredients.  I also figured that, compared to other brands, it was about as well as I was going to do.
A few weeks ago, I decided to switch to Everyday Minerals' foundation, because the price of Bare Minerals had become too ridiculous for me.  I decided to try EM's foundation, and ordered a jar of their Original Glo base.  I was weary at first, because I can be rather picky when it comes to foundation.  (I was stuck in a bit of a Bare Minerals rut, honestly.)  After wearing it for a few days and figuring out the best way to apply it, I love it more than Bare Minerals!  It's so light and fresh!  And, in my own opinion, EM's base does seem to have slightly better ingredients.
(Now, both Everyday Minerals and Bare Minerals contain mica.  I've researched mica quite a bit, and it seems to be quite a controversial ingredient.  Some say it's not so good, some say it's nothing to worry about.  In my own opinion, I feel as though wearing mineral makeup that contains mica is still better than wearing some of the other chemical-laden makeups out there.  Please feel free to research mica yourself and form your own opinion!)

I'm also switching over all of my skin-care products, and I will share that with you in a new post soon.  If you would like to read more about the chemicals found in makeup, I urge you to check out this infographic.
And, if you're curious about the specific shades and colors I wear, here's a list of what's pictured above!
Original Glo base - Fair
Blush - New Car Smell
Eyeliner - Mrs. Coffee
Eyeshadow - Jane Eyre
Eyeshadow - Wildflowers
Eyeshadow - Queen Anne's Lace
Eyeshadow - Hot Chocolate
Concealer - Multi-Intensive Concealer/Eye Primer

P.S.  Please note that this post is in no way affiliated with or sponsored by Everyday Minerals.  This post is my personal opinion of the brand and the products of theirs which I use.

Wonderful Bits of Miscellany // Dear Friend

Photos by Rebekka Seale.
Happy Wednesday, friends.  As I sit and patiently wait for 9 o'clock to come, oh 9 o'clock, when one of my favorite shows, Face Off, comes on, I thought it was high time I shared another Wonderful Bits of Miscellany post.  Because lately, I've fallen deeply for plenty of miscellaneous bits, yet have struggled to find the time to share them with you.
(Do any of you watch Face Off?  It comes on the SyFy Sci-Fi channel, and is completely wonderful.  I wish I could do makeup as well as the contestants can.  I'd be making monsters and new Tim Burton movie characters left and right! ;] )
Anywho, I'd like to present to you the wonderful world of Rebekka Seale.  I can get lost in her blog, Dear Friend, so easily.  Her pictures are so bright and dreamy.  Rebekka begins each post with "Dear Friend," which I love.  It's as if she's written a personal letter to you, sharing the wonderful details of her happy world.  She knits cute hats, and bakes yummy things.  She also paints.  She paints and paints the most magical paintings, of houses, and animals, and lovely calendars.  (Her monthly calendar paintings have found their way to my desktop each month this year so far.)  Plus, she's just lovely.

That's my miscellaneous bit for this week, dearies.
Have a wonderful, wonderful night!

Meet My March Sponsors!

Well friends, I'm so excited to share my very first Sponsor Highlight post with you!  This month, I have 6 lovely ladies gracing my blog.  They run blog, shoppes, and are simply wonderful.  I do hope you'll take a few minutes to say hello and get to know them.

Hi There!  My name is Lori Lynn and I blog over at A Little Slice of Special.  It's my creative space for my time away from my day job as a tax policy analyst.  It's where I play with clothes, figure out my personal style, play with makeup, and geek out over all the fun things I find and encounter!  I love animals, I'm a vegetarian, I love a good tea party, and glitter, polka dots, and minty colored things make me very happy....and dinosaurs, penguins, koalas, unicorns, and zombies! All that, and coffee.  Did I mention I have raging ADHD?! I recently opened a tiny etsy shop, The Minty Koala where I sell paintings and vintage goodies.  Oh and I live in Saint Paul, Minnesota with my Husband, dog, kitties, and birdie!

I'm a stylish biker, surfer, avid thrifter and tattoo designer and City Bird’s Nest is where I show all the adventures I go on with my husband. I love to sew, am obsessed with flowers and vintage fabric. I run my own shop filled with illustrations and hand painted jewelry and hope to add a bit more floral illustrations to the mix!

Over at Miss Larissa bree you will find an abundance of animals and cute things and lots of magic!  I'm a little bit of a hermit who loves to bake and cuddle all my little furbabies.

Hi! I'm Amylou! I love photography and I recently opened my little shop to share my favorite nature photos. Some of my favorite past times are watching broadway musicals, creating embroidery art, thrifting, and photo adventures. Please come by my little shop and blog! I would love to meet you!

My blog is a collection of all my crafty creations and things which put a smile on my face. It also varies from parts of my life that make me super happy and slices of things which need to be shown to the world and make your eyes light up with joy. I am starting to find what is really me in the way of my crafts and I am slowly developing this into my blog and shoppe.

Violet Lulu's mum Hanna is an Australian work-a-holic hairstylist turned stay at home mum, compulsive thrifter and sometimes master chef wannabe. She blogs about adventures with her husband to be, never blogs about their upcoming wedding because she's found herself to be a terrible wedding planner (though a great dreamer) and writes love letters to their most precious gift, 10 month old Violet Lulu.

Pop in and say hello to all of these lovely ladies!  They truly are wonderful!
Happy Sunday, friends.

Here's To March

February through Instagram.

Goodbye, February.  Overall, you were a lovely month, and I'm sad to see you go.  I grew closer to new people, pushed myself further, and considered new possibilities for myself.  I was able to cross off a goal on my 22 Before 23 list when we visited Lawrence, which was to travel to a place I had never been.  I laughed more, cried less, and felt love all around me.  It was nice to know you this year, February.

Here's to March.  To Springtime and newly-blooming trees.  To more sunshine and less cold.  More early mornings, early nights, and feeling better.  Walking Dead marathons with my mom.  Starting my first few bits of a summer garden.  Submitting applications that make my heart beat fast and my tummy have butterflies full of nervousness.  March, I can't wait for you.

11 Little Things

I was recently tagged by both Rebecca of Manzanita and Larissa of Miss Larissa Bree for this snazzy little "11 Things" survey.  Since they both tagged me, I've decided to answer both sets of their questions for a bit of extra-fun!

Here's how you play:
1. Post these rules.
2. Post a photo of yourself and 11 random things.
3. Answer the questions set for you in the original post.
4. Create 11 new questions and tag people to answer them.
5. Go to their blog/twitter and tell them you've tagged them.

1.  I can wiggle my ears. :]
2.  The hospital I was born in can be seen in the movie Friday Night Lights.
3.  I have a spinal condition called lordosis, which causes my spine in the lower part of my back to curve forward.  Consequently, in order to keep my level of back pain down, I can't do things like run or lift heavy things.  Daaarn. ;]
4.  I also dislocated my kneecap in a basketball game in the 8th grade.  It was pretty disgusting.
5.  I've probably already shared this before, but I've been obsessed with the Titanic since I was in 2nd grade.
6.  My earliest memory is from when I was 2 years old.  I can remember details about the layout of the living room and kitchen in the house we lived at the time in Midland, Texas.  I can also remember quite well the day my brother was born when I was 2 and a half.
7.  I hate almost all grape-flavored things.  I blame the chewable medicines my mom used to give me when I was little.
8.  I'm also slightly OCD, which I get from my dad, hah!  I have a thing with the number 3, and things facing left instead of right.
9.  My dream is to have a farm outside of Seattle one day.
10.  I love horror movies, especially old ones.  Bela Lugosi has a very special place in this heart of mine.
11.  I also adore Tim Burton.  I have a tattoo of a Burton-inspired heart on the inside of my left wrist.  (Which reaaallly needs to be touched up, hah.)

11 Questions from Manzanita
1. Describe your perfect day, who would be there?
My perfect day would consist of waking up around 7:30am, and spending the entire day with my family and boyfriend.  We'd have a lovely breakfast, then perhaps venture out for a bit of thrifting and antiquing in the city, have a nice lunch, then return home to spend the evening crocheting and watching I Love Lucy!

2. If you could do one thing that would be felt worldwide, what would it be?
Oh my, what a wonderful question.  Let's see...I think that it would have to do something with kindness.  I become frustrated with the lack of kindness and thoughtfulness in this world.  It breaks my heart that people won't simply be nice.  From picking on a kid in school, to starting wars and every mean thing in between, I just don't understand it.  It's not necessary.  I'm not exactly sure how I would do it, but it would definitely be about kindness.

3. What is your favorite book of all time?
Oh goodness...what a difficult question.  I would have to say either Fahrenheit 451 or Tuesdays With Morrie.  Both books I read in my high school AP English 3 class, and fell head over heels for.  I've loved every piece I've read by both authors, but those two have always stuck with me.

4. If you could keep any wild animal as a pet what would it be?
A deer!  Or a moose, if he would let me.

5. Describe your first kiss?
I'd rather not, haha.

6. If you could time travel to one era when would it be and why?
The 30's into the 40's.  I love both eras so much, it's hard to choose.  I think the 30's is my favorite decade overall, especially design-wise and architecturally.  The homes and buildings built in the 30's were impeccable! A couple of years ago, I worked in a building in downtown Oklahoma City that had touches of the 30's deco style.  It was beautiful.  I also love the fashion of the 30's ever so much.  The clothes were feminine, with a touch of perfect masculinity.
I think fashion-wise though, I love the 40's more.  The clothes were beautiful, with lightweight sundresses and fancy Oxford shoes, and beautiful hairstyles.  I'd love to travel back in time and see it for myself.

7. Who taught you your most cherished lesson and what was it?
My most cherished lesson came from someone who didn't realize that they were teaching me a lesson at all - someone who made me feel bad for being who I am.  Through the way I was treated by this person, I learned that it's perfectly okay to be just who I am, no mind to what others think.

8. How did you meet your best friend?
My best friend is my baby kitty (I'm not joking), and we met one day when I wandered into PetSmart and fell head over heels for him. :]

9. What do you photograph most?
Landscapes and scenery.  Soon, product photos for Etsy!  And I suppose myself, too, since I'm getting into fancy outfit photos. :]

10. What do you look forward to every day?
Spending quality time with my kitten, my crochet hook and yarn, and sleeping.

11. If you could listen to one musician for the rest of your life who would it be?
Just one??  Goodness, me...let's see...  I'll have to say Ville Valo, because his voice calms me like nothing else can.

11 Questions from Miss Larissa Bree
1. What is your favorite food?
I have three very unhealthy food loves...ice cream, mac n' cheese, and pie.  I try not to eat them all too frequently...but boy, they're delicious.

2. If you could own an exotic animal, what would it be?
A deer!

3. What is your number one, all-time, favorite blog?
This is such a hard question for me to answer, because I love so many, and all for different reason.  But, for the sake of the question, I think I'll have to go with Delightfully Tacky.  I love Elizabeth's style ever-so much, plus she lives in the Great Northwest, AND has a Winnebago - two dreams of mine!

4. If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
Seattle, Washington.

5. What is your all-time favorite book?
Take a peek at Rebecca's questions above for the answer to this one. ^^ :]

6. What would your "last meal" be?
Mac n' cheese, with a side of ice cream and pie. ;]

7. Do you believe in love at first sight?
I don't know...  No, I don't think so.  I think you can be intensely drawn to someone at first sight, beyond just their physical appearance, but I think you really have to get to know someone before you can determine whether or not you're in love with them.

8. What would your ideal Sunday morning consist of?
Sleeping in!  Then perhaps a bit of breakfast and peppermint tea, reading, and crocheting.

9. Why do you blog?
The main reason I blog is to document this wonderful time in my life, so I (and someday, my children) will have something to look back on.

10. If you had to choose one color to wear forever, what would you pick?
One color from head to toe, or one color to work into each outfit?  If we're going with one color from head to toe, I'd have to go with a wonderful neutral like grey, camel brown, or navy.  If it's one color to somehow work into every outfit I wear for the rest of my life, I'm going to have to go with mustard yellow, since it's my favorite!

My questions for you:
1.  If you could listen to only one song for the rest of your life, what song would it be and why?
2.  If you could have any talent at all, what would it be?
3.  Pie or cake? :]
4.  Name one decade you would love to live in, if you could?
5.  Many, many years from now, what would you love to look back on and say you did?
6.  What does living each day to the fullest mean to you?
7.  If you could live anywhere on Earth, where would you choose?
8.  Who is your favorite author?
9.  If you could have dinner with one person, living or dead, who would you choose and why?
10.  Skirts, dresses, or pants?
11.  What is your favorite quote?

And for this challenge, I tag EVERYONE!  I'm really bad about choosing who to tag, and I feel bad when I feel like I've left someone out...so, I'm choosing to tag anyone and everyone who wants to play along!
Please post your links in my comments so I can read yours, too!

Happy Friday, friends!  It's the weekend!
xo, Allie.

P.S.  Don't forget to take a peek at my new sponsors for March!  They're all incredibly sweet ladies!

Our Trip To Lawrence // What I Wore

Details:
Sweater // Thrifted
Undershirt // Target
Jeans // Thrifted
Shoes // Payless
Purse // Old Navy

I found this sweater a few weeks ago in a cute little thrift store (you may remember me initially sharing it here), and I had been aching to wear it.  It's a little shorter than I normally like my shirts/sweaters to be, but the print is just too perfect.  I mustn't forget that it's also made from Merino wool, and is incredibly soft and cozy.
I decided the night before we left that it would be the perfect top to wear to Lawrence, and with as chilly as the wind was, I was glad I did.

I must talk about my shoes.  My little mock-moccasins from Payless.  They've quickly become my favorite pair of shoes.  So much so that I ordered a pair in black just before they sold out and disappeared from my life forever.
I feel like moccasins look cute with literally everything.  When I'm getting dressed for work in the early morning, on the rare occasion that I wear slacks (as I hate the way slacks feel and look on me), I always consider pairing these moccasins with them, even though I know they aren't exactly "professional".  (What is professional, anyway?)  However, that's neither here nor there.  Simply put, I love these shoes.

Have a lovely day, friends.

Our Trip To Lawrence // Pt. 2

For part 2 of our trip to Lawrence, I thought I would share our photos from the game and campus.
The game was an absolute blast.  We arrived at Allen Fieldhouse around 4:30pm, and the game started at 7.  It was freezing cold out, but it was incredible standing outside in line with fellow fans decked from head to toe in KU garb. Once inside, I spent perhaps a little too much time oohing and ahhing over everything beheld by my sight, then we found our seats just above the student section.
We stood the whole game.  We yelled, chanted, booed, clapped, taunted, and ended the game with the ever-so inspiring "Rock Chalk Chant".  KU beat Texas Tech with a rather distant victory.  There is nothing in the world quite like college basketball, I believe.

The next day, we woke up early to get a few hours of exploring Lawrence in before heading home.  We stopped for donuts and passed through downtown a bit more, to catch anything we missed before (like two bookstores, 'The Raven' and 'The Dusty Bookshelf').  We drove through local neighborhoods, which held some of the most gorgeous homes I have ever seen.  Then, before we decided to trek back to Oklahoma, I told Sean I just had to see campus one more time.  I wanted to take more photos of it, to capture it just as it was so I could remember it once I was home.  We made circles around the campus, drove down streets we weren't supposed to, stopped in the middle of the road to snap photos, and attracted odd stares.
The campus is beautiful.  The architecture of the buildings is intricate and strikingly old.  The campus itself is very hilly, and I can just imagine myself trudging up those hills in freezing weather trying to make my way to class.  It was quiet, which is perfect for me.
I think know I want to go to school here someday.
